What To Do When You Doubt Your Partner

You are dating the love of your life, things are going well and all the right things are falling into place. Then one minute, you start having second thoughts about this special person.

It is only natural to doubt one's partner from time to time. It is only problematic if it is not resolved early enough. For some, it is a passing thought, for others a recurring one. The longevity of the relationship is dependent on how couples react to these situations.

Here are two major ways to handle the issue of doubt in your relationship:

Firstly, evaluate the situation and try to put the doubts in perspective and see the bigger picture. The inclination to quit might stem from your partner having said the wrong thing once, them falling short of your expectations or sexual incompatibility. Or it could be a bigger issue like abuse, or multiple counts of infidelity and/or deception, or a controlling partner.

You don't want to quit your partner over some basic issues because truly no one is perfect, and part of being in a relationship means tolerating each other's excesses. But if your partner repeatedly invalidates you or threatens your safety, then maybe you should listen to your guts and call it quits.

Secondly, communicate with your partner about these doubts. Have a sit down with them and engage in an open and honest discussion.

Communication easily solves a lot of relationship issues. The impact is that you will have a grasp of the issues on both ends and can decide to either tackle it head-on if the doubt is one-sided or go your separate ways if the feeling is mutual. The advantage here is that whatever decision you make after this step will be a well-informed one.

These doubts do not magically puff into the air after the conversation ensues. They most likely would still linger. But if both partners have decided to work it out then it is time to start having more hopes than doubts for the relationship.

No relationship is always smooth-sailing and hitch-free. The goal is to clear the doubts when they arise and strive to understand each other a lot more.

Doubts, if positively attended to can turn a good relationship into a great one but if ignored and fuelled things can go from good to terrible quickly.
