Weird Wedding Facts: The 'Bloody' Wedding Rituals of the Daur in China

Wedding traditions around the world are so diverse, from the relatable; to the tear-jerking; to depending on perspective, the downright bizarre.

The Daur ethnic group of China has some pretty uh, different wedding rituals. In order to pick their wedding date, the engaged couple hold on to one knife and together, they execute a baby chick. That’s not all. They proceed to dissect the little bird and inspect its liver. If it’s a healthy, good looking liver, they are in the clear and can set a date and start planning. If the liver is not satisfactory, it is bad luck and they have to repeat the process until they find a more befitting baby chicken liver.

After the wedding ceremony, the bride is accompanied by a large bridal party of the groomsmen, bridesmaids and bride’s younger brothers and cousins to the groom’s house. The groom’s family entertain these important guests with great hospitality until the next day. The bridal party then wait for their chance to steal several bowls, plates, goblets and plates before they leave for home. The groom then has to redeem the stolen items by taking some wine to the cheeky thieves, otherwise they would not be returned.

On this basis of bloody trails, grand larceny and blackmail, the couple may then begin their happy life together. Awww, how sweet.
