Ask Sugar: I Don't Want To Live With My Husband

Dear Sugar,

I just got engaged, and my wedding is about two months away. My fiance has been making plans to rent a space that is fit for our lives as a married couple. We've been searching for houses now, and we found some good ones, but I have been feigning a disgust.

The truth is, I am afraid to tell him that I don't want to live with him when we eventually marry. I enjoy my personal space a lot, and I am convinced that I might get stressed out from living with him. I was with him throughout lockdown in Lagos, and the experience got tiring for me. I'm concerned that he and everyone, including family will not approve. How do I convince him otherwise?

Dear O.A

Many people experience this, and it's great that you're aware of it. Since you'll be spending the rest of your lives together, you must insist on talking about it and show him your perspective.

Of course, it may be difficult at first, but it's not unusual for him to notice how much you enjoy living alone, especially if you've been together for a long time. Consider having a deep conversation with him about it; only then can you both fight families who are against this.

Wish you all the best,

Sugar
